Political Economy of Development: Challenges and Perspectives

Understanding the root causes of economic growth and well-being stands among the most fascinating and important topics in the social sciences. A large body of literature demonstrates the importance of a variety of factors including technologies, institutions, human capital, culture, and decisions of political elites. We know a lot about the developed world, but there is still lack of understanding of developing and transition countries, especially those countries with non-Western European historical and cultural background. The workshop aims at bridging this gap by bringing together scholars of post-communist political economy with scholars working on the Middle East, other fields, and other regions.

A supplementary workshop session will focus on political economy and related topics in Russia and other post-communist countries in comparative perspective. This session will involve intensive discussion held at NYU Abu Dhabi on November 1, 2018.

Contributions from the fields of political economy, sociology, economics and political science are invited. We welcome submissions that adopt empirical qualitative or quantitative research designs and that can offer useful perspectives on important challenges in political economy of development.
