This is a website of a joint initiative of the Institute for East European Studies of the Free University Berlin (FUB) and a group of former Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) fellows at the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE University) supported by the AvH as an institutional partnership project to foster cooperation between these two institutions and to involve in it a broader group of younger fellows and doctoral students.
The project is launched for 2021-2023, welcoming academics interested in its research scope and seeking new ideas for collaborations, research projects, and joint publications.

The HSE-FUB online workshop series "Varieties of Populism in East and West" continued on December 6th. The theme of the third workshop was "Long-Term Decline of Regions and the Rise of Populism: The Case of Germany".
On November 11th, the HSE-FUB online workshop series "Varieties of Populism in East and West" continued. The focus of the second seminar was "Children and Childhood in Populist Discourse and Political Practices in Central and Eastern Europe." Dr. Mikołaj Rakusa-Suszczewski (University of Warsaw) was the guest speaker.
The online workshop series "Varieties of Populism in East and West" began on October 25th. The first seminar's topic was "Economic Features of Populism in a Few CEE Countries."

This workshop was a part of a joint HSE University and FUB project “Populism and New Conservatism in East and West: Socio-Economic and Political Patterns at the Beginning of the 21st Century” supported by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

On May 27 the first workshop “Varieties of Populism in East and West” was held online. This workshop was organized by the Free University Berlin (FUB) and the HSE University as a part of the three year-long Alexander von Humboldt institutional partnership project. The project aims to strengthen the bonds between the universities and bring together scholars interested in studying different aspects of populism.
Tomorrow, on May 27 the digital workshop "Varieties of Populism in East and West" organized by Freie Universität Berlin and Higher School of Economics Moscow will be held online on Zoom platform.
In March 2021 the HSE University and Freie Universität Berlin (FUB) were awarded an institutional partnership grant from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to foster cooperation between these two institutions and to involve in it a broader group of younger fellows and doctoral students. On May 27th this project will start with a digital workshop "Varieties of Populism in East and West" (deadline for submission is April 23rd; for more info about the workshop see the link at the end of the news). We interviewed Professor Dr. Katharina Bluhm, director of the Institute for East European Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin, about the goals of this project and prospects of cooperation between the HSE University and the FUB.
On February 18, a kickoff meeting of key participants from both sides was organized to exchange ideas about the adaptation of the project realization to the pandemic and especially of the first steps of the project to be done in 2021.
