Digital Workshop “Varieties of Populism in East and West”
On May 27 the first workshop “Varieties of Populism in East and West” was held online. This workshop was organized by the Free University Berlin (FUB) and the HSE University as a part of the three year-long Alexander von Humboldt institutional partnership project. The project aims to strengthen the bonds between the universities and bring together scholars interested in studying different aspects of populism.
The workshop united researchers not only from the FUB and the HSE University but also from other European, German, and Russian universities. During the event Dr. Emilia Palonen (University of Helsinki) as a key-note speaker gave a lecture “Populism – from hype to polarization”, then 36 participants presented the main theses of their research. All papers were divided between 4 working groups:
1. The state, elites, and authoritarian survival (Chairs: Prof. Dr. Alexander Libman FUB, Prof. Dr. Andrei Yakovlev HSE)
2. Modern populism and the media (Chairs: Prof. Dr. Michael Rochlitz Uni Bremen, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Muehl-Benninghaus HSE)
3. Development, entrepreneurship, and populism (Chairs: Prof. Dr. Katharina Bluhm FUB, Prof. Dr. Alexander Chepurenko HSE)
4. Migration, social movements, and populism (Chairs: Dr. Mihai Varga FUB, Assistant Prof. Dr. Lili di Puppo HSE)
During the final session of the workshop participants discussed opportunities for further cooperation such as collaborations in their research projects, working on applications for the HSE University April conference in 2022 and publishing a monograph in Springer Series.Dr. Steffen Mehlich, Head of Sponsorship and Network Department at Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, also explained how to get Foundation scholarships to do research in Germany and Russia.
