Во время двухмесячной командировки Денис занимался научной работой в контакте с Кжиштофом Краковски (Assistant Professor, Collegio Carlo Alberto) и выступил с докладом “Does Middle Class Promote Civic Activism? Individual and Group Level Effects of the Middle Class”.

Abstract. The role of the middle class  is a subject of major controversies. While traditionally the middle class was seen as a driver of democratization and of political and civic activism, more recent literature suggests that the middle class can become a pillar of an authoritarian regime. One of the explanations for the puzzle could be associated with the need to distinguish between the individual-level and the group-level effects of the middle class: the political effects of the middle class can be driven by both attitudes and behavior of its individual members and by the fact that larger share of the middle class in the society changes the behavior of both middle-class members and other social groups. We use a boutique survey we conducted in the city of Moscow in autumn 2021 to investigate both levels of the effects of the middle class and find that both individuals belonging to the middle class are more likely to engage in civic activism and that high share of the middle class in the population encourages all people to engage in civic activism. To identify the specific mechanisms driving our results, we perform a conjoint experiment as part of our survey, identifying how individuals react on calls to engage in civic activism coming from counterparts with different characteristics.
