Speaker - Maria Giulia Silvagni, Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the International Center for the Study of Institutions and Development HSE.
Abstract: The paper contributes to the literature on the analysis of inequality using post-transition Russian regional data, the aim being to shed light on the dynamics of per capita gross regional product and to assess which factors are designing the current path at the aggregate level. Using non-parametric techniques such as exploratory spatial data analysis, transient evolution and decompositions of gross regional product, results show evidence of geographical concentration of extractive and business activities in selected areas as the main points which should capture the policy-makers agenda. As a robustness check, parametric analysis of convergence is provided which confirms the lack of convergence, albeit the phenomenon is following a decreasing trend in the long run.
