BASEES Uppsala Conference 2018

The Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies, Uppsala University and the British Association for Slavonic and East European Studies hosted a two-day conference that was held at Uppsala University in the middle of September 2018. ICSID team members Fabian Burkhardt, Noa Buckley and David Szakonyi took part in the Conference and presented their papers.

The theme of the Conference was ‘Regimes and Societies in Conflict: Eastern Europe and Russia since 1956’. Over the last 60 years Eastern Europe and Russia have been the scene of immense political, social and cultural upheaval. This conference provided the opportunity to reflect on the changes in the region that have led from Stalinist dictatorships to the very varied polities of contemporary Eastern Europe and Russia.
The range of topics varied depending on the research preferences of speakers. Thus, ICSID team  presented their articles within the section «Executives in Eurasia»: Noa Buckley presented his paper «Verticals and Horizontals: Networks of Power under Consolidating Authoritarianism», Fabian Burkhardt – «Kinship Networks and Russia’s Bureaucratic Elite».
David Szakonyi presented his article "Political conflict and regime stability in post-Soviet authoritarian countries" in the framework of the section "Elite Definition under Autocracy: Evidence from Russia" (co-authored by John Reuter).
