Laura Solanko: ‘An Academic Today Cannot Help but Want to Create and Work’

February 20 hosted the seminar of thematic cycle "Institutional problems of the Russian economy", organized by the Institute for Industrial and Market Economics. The report "Transition and path-dependence in knowledge-intensive industry location: case of Russian professional services" made PhD of geographical sciences researcher at the International Center for the Study of Institutions and Development (HSE) Denis Ivanov.
In the report, Denis Ivanov noted in many respects unique situation for  Russia when in fact the business services market is formed due to the reduction of extensive scientific sector, which was once the Soviet Union and was forced to transform after the "economic shock". The emerging sector relied on the research and development of the Soviet period as a source of skilled labor and largely inherited its geography.

On February 26-28, 2014, the HSE will host a conference on ‘The Role of the Humboldt Foundation in Consolidating and Developing Russian Science during the Transition’.  Former Russian grant holders of the Humboldt Foundation and current research award winners are expected to be there. The Interdisciplinary conference is timed to coincide with the Foundation's 60th anniversary and the recent Germany-Russia Year. The event is to celebrate successful cooperation between Russian and German scientists. Andrei Yakovlev, Director of the Institute for Industrial and Market Studies and the International Center for the Study of Institutions and Development, Professor of the Faculty of Public Administration, agreed to give an interview to the HSE News Service about the influence of the Humboldt Foundation on his own life and on Russian scientific life in general.

100,000 Students Sign up for HSE Courses at Coursera

At the moment, the HSE offers twelve courses on its page with Coursera. Courses taught in Russian include Financial Markets and Institutions, Fundamentals of Corporate Finance, History of Economic Thought, Microeconomics Principles, Macroeconomics, Industrial Organization, Labor Economics, Introduction to LaTeX.  Introduction to Neuroeconomics: How the Brain Makes Decisions, Public Economics, Core Concepts in Data Analysis, and Understanding Russians: Contexts of Intercultural Communication are among the courses taught in English.
